Volunteering is Sexy Part 2: My hybrid-Socialist Weekend

So, the last time I posted here, I discussed how volunteering is sexy, and included an interview with Regina Anderson who has coined the phrase “Hybrid-Socialism” and “Perfect Hybrid-Socialist First Dates”. (Read the post for definitions.) My goal, after writing the post, was to then actually go on a hybrid socialist first date, and write all about it.
Unfortunately, I am still in the process of scheduling an actual hybrid-socialist first date, but as I am not one to let my love-life (or current lack thereof) stand in my way, I will share instead the hybrid-socialist weekend I recently had. In which I hung out a lot with none other than Ms. Perfect-Hybrid-Socialist-First-Date Herself, Regina.
It started last Saturday. Regina and I were volunteering for the Aviary’s Night in the Tropics, since our coworker, Trisha Ross, was on the planning committee. The event was so much fun, and I wrote all about it over on Coro Pittsburgh’s blog, so please check it out. I had never been to the Aviary before, but had a blast seeing the birds, eating great food, selling raffle tickets, and closing out the evening with a little dancing. Not such a bad way to spend a Saturday.
Sunday consisted of even more hybrid-socialist-awesome. A group of us got together to go farming. Yes, farming. Yes, I, the girl who grew up in suburbia then moved to the city, and who can’t even grow herbs in her kitchen went farming. (Stop laughing please Mom.)
We met up at Enricos Biscotti Co. in the strip, which, first of all, YUM. Then drove out to Butler to help tend Meadow Rock Farm & Gardens in Butler, PA.
We picked beans. We weeded kale and Swiss Chard. We drank lavender lemonade, and brought home fresh corn.
Jordan Kay took some lovely photos, which you can see here.
While farming won’t be making it on to my list of “callings in life”, it was a nice way to spend a beautiful Sunday morning. We had a lot of fun, and I will definitely go back.
After the farm Regina and I cooled off at the Polish Hill pool. I’m not quite sure how I’ve lived in Pittsburgh for 5 years without ever going to one of the pools, but I’ve made it to the Bloomfield and Polish Hill pools this summer, and they’re awesome. It’s only 4 bucks for the day. The crowds are always a diverse group of people, and if you’re ever looking for inspiration for a new tattoo, the Polish Hill Pool is the place to be.
We also wandered through the Polish Hill arts festival on our way back, which had arts, crafts, food, live music, and other general fun-ness.
All in all, it was a fantastic weekend. Fun was had, good was done, everyone benefited. While any of the events would have made a great first date, they were also awesome ways to spend time with friends. Volunteering is sexy y’all!
